Social listening
I chose Netflix because it is something that I actually use and I'm sure hundreds of others use. I'm convinced we will have the same thoughts. Something I say and many other people: "Oh my god why is there only 8 episodes of this series?''
Netflix's value proposition is to provide people with 1,000 of movies and shows at a affordable cost, they care about your boredom. Recently Netflix added a new show called Outer Banks and it has taken the internet by storm. I'm a huge fan myself, and I find other people asking the same question as me. When will there be another season? Why is there only 8 episodes? Also they tag the hottest actors from trending movies and shows!
Netflix's Instagram account is constantly being harassed, by me and others, with these questions. The team behind Netflix's account is actually very active, with their star actors and actress and their fans. They will joke back and forth and be sure to notify customers when their favorite series is coming back and or if they're putting a classic movie on their streaming service. This is great for them because as long as they're interacting with their consumers they will not forget about that show they binge watched for 3 days straight.
The message Netflix pushes is "we have got you covered". You will never run out of anything to watch, just keep scrolling. Something I admire about Netflix's marketing is the story telling. Obviously the shows and movies are stories but Netflix takes it further and makes characters relatable. They bring them to life through social media to keep people engaged and excited for the next time they are on screen. The movies and shows that make you cry are the most memorable I think. Just like the Dwayne wade commercial you won't forget, you won't forget that series you stayed up all night watching, crying and laughing.
I do agree with what the company is doing but what I would do differently is marketing the series that have more episodes because that is what people want. Short and sweet is a trend but that trend gets old quick.
I learned that I am way more invested in Netflix than I thought. Also that the entertainment business isn't easy, the attention span in 2020 isn't very long, so the fact that Netflix latches on like that just shows they have got the right formula and will continue to be successful.
